Alex’s hands on her shoulders. The tape measure around her thigh. Kathy’s trying to remember the last time she felt this alive. This wanted. This wet.
Personal Trainer Part 2: The Trainer, by Mia Sumner
“Tough day babe?” Richard glanced up from his ever-present phone long enough to meet Kathy’s eyes across the dinner table. She gave him a small smile, feeling the tightness across her neck that lingered from work. Before she could even respond though, his eyes wandered back to the phone. Kathy waited for the follow-up question. There was always supposed to be one after “tough day,” some small proof that he wanted the answer. Richard’s thumb moved across the phone screen instead.

“I’ve got something for you.” He kept talking even as his fingers flicked across the glowing screen. “All this stress, you need something for yourself, and she’s excellent, I did my research. One of the partners at work swears by her. Executive clientele, private sessions, all very efficient.”
Kathy frowned, not entirely sure what Richard was talking about. She was about to ask, when Richard slid a card across the table towards her, his eyes still glued to his phone. Kathy reached for the card, her hand touch Richard’s briefly.
“Oh, thanks, that’s so thoughtful.” She said, recognizing the tone as the same one she used for difficult colleagues at work. She stared at the business card in her hand, it said: Alexandra Moore. Performance and Conditioning.
The gym was not at all what Kathy had expected. Pristine, quiet, almost sterile in appearance. A minimalism that somehow suggest large amounts of money had been spent on it. The air smelled faintly of eucalyptus and disinfectant. Every surface looked polished, wiped down, expensive. Even the silence felt curated. It was strangely empty too. One, bored receptionist in an empty hall of a room. The girl, in her twenties Kathy guessed, was wearing tight athletic clothes that showed off her toned arms and made Kathy feel overdressed.
Kathy adjusted her bag strap, steeling her nerves a bit to walk to the receptionist desk without feeling like a fraud. After all, she reminded herself, it’s just exercise. The receptionist merely acknowledged her name and nodded to the seats asking her to wait. Kathy did as instructed and tried not to fidget impatiently.
Alexandra arrived a few minutes later, or at least Kathy immediately assumed it was Alexandra. She was younger than Kathy had expected, late twenties perhaps, with fitted athletic wear that made every curve of her body obvious. Her jet-black hair was pulled into a severe ponytail, exposing the sharp planes of her face. She did not scan the room looking for Kathy; she looked directly at her, as if she had already decided. She walked directly towards Kathy with an air of certainty, offering out her hand without hesitation.
“You can call me Alex.” She said her handshake firm and her eyes locking on to Kathy’s, who found herself looking up at this woman, instinctively straightening her posture, a reaction which triggered a slight smirk.
“Hi. Hi, Alex.” The repetition embarrassed her immediately. At work she could brief a room full of executives without blinking, and here she was stumbling over two syllables. Kathy cleared her throat, finding herself surprisingly nervous, her palm embarrassingly clammy in that firm grip. Alex held on a moment, longer before letting go.
“Follow me Kathy, I lease a room just down the hall.” She turned and walked away her steps steady and confident. Kathy hurriedly stood, trying not to run after her to keep up.
The click of Alex’s heels, not athletic shoes Kathy noted, on the hard floor, was almost hypnotic. Kathy couldn’t quite catch up with Alex and found herself just walking behind and admiring the sway of her toned body as she moved.
Fortunately the room Alex took her too was much smaller and less intimidating than that grand entrance hall. Alex sat down and gestured to Kathy to take a seat opposite as she picked up a clipboard and pen and started asking questions.
Kathy was only half paying attention. It was the usual things about health history, stress levels, fitness goals. Alex’s voice was calm, confident, direct. Her bottom lip, full, and her mouth still with the slightest of smirks.
“What does your body feel like at the end of a workday?” Alex’s voice cut through Kathy’s wandering mind. The question hung there longer than it should have. Kathy heard the soft scratch of Alex’s pen waiting above the page.
“Tense. Like my muscles have had to physically contain everything.”
Alex glanced up for the first time, her almond shaped eyes narrowing slightly those dark lashes making her brown eyes magnetic. “When did you last feel physically strong Kathy?” It felt less like a fitness question than a diagnosis.
“Its… I… don’t remember.” Kathy’s voice trailed off, surprised at her own honesty. “Work has been so busy. There is no meaningful time for anything else. None for me at least. Sometimes it just feels like I’m playing a part, you know?”
Alex watched her intently, writing notes as Kathy kept speaking.
“It’s just really hard to be… what people expect me to be. Sometimes I feel like I’m just a shell. A hollow shell.” Kathy stopped, her cheeks heating up, embarrassed at what she’d just said. But Alex didn’t react, she just finished writing her notes, then stood up. Kathy bit her lip, glancing up at the woman who’s eyes seemed to be assessing every part of her body.
“I’m going to check your shoulders and upper back,” Alex said, already moving behind her. “Tell me if anything feels uncomfortable.” She placed her hands on Kathy’s shoulders, thumbs pressing firmly.
“You’re carrying a lot of tension right here Kathy.” Alex observed, her voice calm and factual as her thumbs sank in just below the base of Kathy’s neck, firm enough to hurt for half a second before the pain opened into relief. Kathy’s breath caught. She tried to turn it into a cough, but Alex’s hands paused, just long enough to make clear she had heard.
“Sit up straight.” Kathy hurriedly obeyed the instruction as Alex’s hands traced her muscles. “You carry everything up here.” She mused, and her hands seemed to linger before she removed them.
Kathy felt herself flush, strange emotions and feelings swirling up from inside her. That casual, personal touch making her achingly aware of something that had been absent from her life for longer than she cared to think about. Richard’s lack of attention now a pang in her chest.
“On your feet.” Alex stepped away for a moment picking up a tape measure, while Kathy sprang upwards out of the chair. The smirk was back in place when Alex turned around again. “Good girl.”
She moved close to Kathy, uncomfortably close, wrapping the tape around Kathy’s waist first and then around her bust. The tape slid around Kathy’s back, cool through the thin fabric of her blouse. Alex’s knuckles brushed the underside of her breast so lightly Kathy could almost pretend it had not happened.
“Nature blessed you didn’t she?” Alex teased and Kathy’s face got even redder. “Arms out.” Kathy tried to keep her emotions in control, Alex was being so professional and here she was nervous and sweaty, something churning in her stomach.
“Legs apart.” Alex knelt down wrapping the tape measure around Kathy’s thigh. Kathy bit her lip, forcing herself to take slow, calm breaths. She almost stepped back. The impulse reached her knees, then died there. Alex looked up, calm and unreadable, waiting as if Kathy’s stillness had answered a question.
Her body’s reaction was unmistakable now. The warmth in her stomach, the fast beats of her heart, the dampness in her panties. She was excited, aroused. Here in the gym. By this woman. She kept her expression composed even as her mind raced. She was very good at composed.
“Excellent,” Alex stood and turned to make further notes on her clipboard. “There’s a lot we can do with you,” Alex said, making another note. “Mobility, strength, posture. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the problem. We’ll start with this.” She handed Kathy a printed programme. “If you look on the third page you’ll see the outline of our sessions.” As she spoke she rested her hand briefly on Kathy’s forearm, making the hairs stand on end. Kathy swallowed.
“You can book your first appointment using the app.” Alex opened the door for Kathy and ushered the dazed woman back out towards the entry hall. Kathy wandered slowly out, barely acknowledging the pretty receptionist as she left.
She didn’t remember walking back to her car, only getting in and closing the door, blocking the world out. She sat their, silent, without starting the engine. Something had changed. That dull emptiness she had been feeling for so long now was gone, replaced by… electricity? She remembered Richard’s words as he’d handed her the card. Someone excellent. How she felt when Alex stood so close to her came flooding back. Her panties were soaked. She hadn’t felt this in years, and, for a woman. Then Richard’s face came back to her: distracted, generous, already elsewhere. He had bought this for her. The thought should have cooled her down. Instead, it made the heat in her stomach twist into something darker.
Kathy hurriedly pulled out her phone and pulled up the app to make her appointment.
